During her first year, she could produce 31 kittens. Those kittens would, in turn, produce their own, and so on. The following chart shows, over 5 years, how many kittens would be produced.
Assumptions:
1. Each female has 2 litters per year.
2. Each litter consists of 3 females and 3 males.
3. Each female delivers only 3 litters, during her lifetime.
*These assumptions are very conservative. Females (particularly cats) can have many more kittens than in the above example.
What happens to all these puppies and kittens?
Some are given away (I'm sure you see ads in the paper all the time), some become strays and live a very short life, some are surrendered to the Humane Society. Those who give away these animals are doing a "good deed" in their heart, but forget how important it is to spay and neuter and, as a result, although these animals now have good homes they end up producing even more offspring. Because of this, MILLIONS of unwanted dogs and cats are euthanized, "put to sleep" each year. There just simply aren't enough home for all these puppies and kittens.
PLEASE, do your part. Spay and neuter your pet(s) and encourage others to do the same! And adopt your next pet from the Lynchburg Humane Society.
